Dr. Maria Oei always wanted to be a dentist and attended the University of Maryland for undergrad and dental school, the first dental college in the world. She has a background in biochemistry, and neurophysiology, and has extensive scientific research experience, including publications from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research within NIH. This gave her a strong foundation for evidence-based dentistry and self-directed learning.
In her final year of dental school, Dr. Oei was one of four students selected as a Diamond Scholar to work alongside AEGD residents (Advanced Education in General Dentistry). This rigorous training program honed her skills in treatment planning, CAD/CAM prosthodontics, and oral surgery. She graduated third in her class with Magna Cum Laude honors and induction to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society. Dr. Oei was also honored with the Student Humanitarian Award from the International College of Dentists for altruistic leadership and serving in local community projects. She regularly volunteers at the Mission of Mercy to provide free dental care to patients in Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Dr. Oei continued her training with additional CE courses in cosmetics, implants, endodontics, and radiology. She initially worked for a large DSO before transitioning to Smile Culture Dental for more personalized care using the latest technologies. She has also built strong relationships with local specialists and technicians to provide seamless interdisciplinary care.
Two words to describe Dr. Oei: empathetic and energetic! She is always running and training for the next race. Her other hobbies include camping and playing piano. Fun fact, she also works at a Halloween haunted house.
